East Passyunk Avenue has been designated as one of three design districts in the eighth annual DesignPhiladelphia Festival. East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District (EPABID) celebrates its thriving creative economy with a day of workshops, tours, special events and promotions to coincide with monthly Second Saturday festivities on Saturday, October 13, 2012. Highlights include a performance by the Quaker City Mummer String Band, design your own guitar activity, Mummer costume design contest for kids, art openings, home and garden tours, and a scavenger hunt. All activities are free (unless noted) and will run from 11:00am to 10:00pm at various locations along and around the commercial corridor. Space is tight in South Philly, and Green Aisle Grocery (1618 EPA), carved
out of a Passyunk rowhome, is designed to maximize every square inch. Owners
Adam and Andrew Erace, with Chef Becca O'Brien, have launched a new local-fruit
jam line out of the 260 square-foot space. Stop by for a sample of peach
hibiscus, blueberry cardamom or other inventive flavors. FREE.
Green Wall
Design

Why is a green wall such a unique design method
for interior and exterior design? Urban
Jungle (1526 EPA) presents a demonstration about the intricacies of green
wall design. They will show you how to design, prepare, and build a living
green wall in your home or business. FREE.

Join us for a day of all things music at Kings Music (1828 EPA)! Record and
design your own personal CD and custom
design your own guitar. The Quaker City Mummer String Band will perform
outside from 1:00pm - 2:30pm. During the show, kids (up to 15 years old) can
enter a design the most imaginative mummers contest. First place prize is four
music lessons or $50 in accessories. FREE.

residents who have made it the interesting and eclectic street that has

Streets Scavenger Hunt

From green streets to complete streets, the City of Philadelphia is re-imagining
how its streets should be designed. Join The Mayor’s Office of Transportation
and Utilities and the Philadelphia Water Department for a Sustainable Streets
Scavenger Hunt. Participants will be able to explore some of Philadelphia’s
most innovative street design features from those that reduce storm-water
overflow to those that protect High scoring teams will be eligible to win
prizes, including a bicycle rack and a rain barrel at a wrap-up happy hour at
Los Caballitos (1651 EPA) at 3:30pm. Meet between 11:00am - 12:00pm at Columbus
Square Recreation Center (1200 Wharton). Free

Design Walking Tour: South Philadelphia

Have you ever wondered about how your
neighborhood was put together? What does architecture and public space tell us
about the cultural, economic, and natural history of a place? Through the lens
of urban design, we'll explore the physical development of South Philadelphia
through a guided walking tour that starts at Capitolo Playground (9th and
Federal). Highlights include the Italian Market and East Passyunk Avenue.

Design-related Second Saturday festivities on East Passyunk will include:
B2 Cafe (1500 EPA) will host a reception for the opening of Countdown to (En)Danger, an art show with pieces that express the artists own interpretation of endangered species and the continued risks of extinction. Stop by between 6:00pm - 9:00pm. Proceeds benefit World Wildlife Fund. FREE.
Chhaya (1823 EPA) shows off its seasonal design skills with new fall menu offerings. Enjoy seasonal crepes, Pumpkin Waffles (with pecan syrup and cinnamon whipped cream), Apple Crisp Pancakes (buttermilk pancakes with apple cranberry filling and toasted crumb topping), Pumpkin Spice Chai and Latte, and Dulce de Leche Latte. Illustrations from Grant Yuhre (www.grantyuhre.com) will also be on exhibit until the end of October.
FUEL (1917 EPA) celebrates fall with $2 Pumpkin Latte all day, plus free Mimosa's with Brunch.
